SEO+Web Marketing=Success!

I have heard many, many tales of what it takes to get onto the upper echelons of Google or your favourite search engine. It often seems like this very elusive, black magical art that is only known to the very few and privileged.

Well, the secret, much like the secret to losing weight is very simple…You have to do the work involved! There is just no other way around it!

So if you think you are going to have a site built and put it up onto the web and that everybody in the hemisphere is going to come on by and pine over your service or product, you might as well make a big sign with your domain name on it and hold it as high as you can in the middle of your living room, because that’s how many people are going to visit your site.

Okay, okay, I know this all sounds dire and dismal but there is a very bright side to all of this.

The cool thing about having your own web site is that you can control ALL the content on it. Try doing that in a newspaper ad. There is so much that you can convey to a potential client that it is potentially THE BEST form of advertising available. Notice I said potentially? That brings us back to holding that sign over your head.

Now before we go into all the things that can be done to get qualified customers to your store front (read: web site) there are a few things to consider.

This is where the almighty budget comes in to play in a big way, because there is no quick fix. You need to be in it for the long term or there will be little or no return on your investment. The good news here is that small amounts spread over a long time actually helps more than dumping a bunch of money in initially and forgetting about it. Of course the bigger your budget the more bases you can cover, but let’s keep it real for a while here.

The first thing to do is figure out who your market is. No, really. I have spoken to so many clients and potential clients that think they are going to be doing business around the globe because thier site is on the “World Wide Web”. Now this may eventually happen but first think about the clientelle you currently have. Who are they? They are the people to market to first. Solution? Start sending out a newsletter once a month. Now don’t go spamming your current customers, but gather all of their email addresses and put them in one place. You can do this with any email program but there are some issues about sending out mass emails. There are also more robust solutions including software that can track customers, send html as well as plain text newsletters, autoresponders, etc.  If you would like assistance on this or have more questions, please contact me.
